MIDI Boarduino

MIDI Boarduino

The MIDI Boarduino is a breadboardable Arduino clone, and it comes with an ATMega168 pre-loaded with bootloader.

The MIDI Boarduino can directly provide a MIDI Out via two series resistors or it can be combined with the MIDI IN/OUT board to provide both MIDI IN and MIDI OUT.

This MIDI Boarduino has 2 mounting holes (unlike other Boarduino designs), which allows the unit to be securely mounted into a project box especially when the 2.1mm power connector socket is in use.

The MIDI Boarduino unit Specifications:

  • Designed , to plug into a breadboard, connect to external 0.1"  matrix boards or connect via female connectors for easy prototyping
  • Size, only 85mm x 20mm (3.35" x 0.78")
  • Pins brought out are, Digital 0 thru 13, Analog 0 thru 5, ARef, 5V, Ground
  • ATmrga168 microcontroller chip comes preprogrammed with a "no-wait" Arduino bootloader
  • 2 red LEDs, power and "pin 13" just like the Arduino Diecimila
  • Available as a low cost kit with standard parts,
  • All through-hole parts are easy to solder
  •  Utilises a 16.00 MHz ceramic resonator,
  • Standard 2.1mm DC jack (just like the original) with 5V regulator to run on 7V-17V power,
  • 1N4001 diode protects against using incorrect wall adapter
  • 3-pin header and two way shorting link for switching between USB and External power,
  • 2-pin header for MIDI OUT
  • 6-pin right-angled  header at the end of PCB for a USB-TTL cable
  • Auto-reset capability when used with a USB-TTL cable

Circuit Schematic:

A circuit schematic of the MIDI Boarduino shows the Input/Output connections. The MIDI Boarduino is designed to connect to external breadboards or matrix boards on a 0.1" grid.

This clone acts just like an Arduino,  it is programmed with the Arduino bootloader, so it can talk to the Arduino software and run sketches just like the original.

Assembly:

The kit includes all parts necessary, the assembly is straightforward and well documented. This design does not include a USB chip, it is designed to use a FTDI USB 232-TTL cable to program the microcontroller.  However since the cable plugs directly into the MIDI Boarduino, you can use one cable for multiple MIDI Boarduinos.
